Viral Marketing, The Youthful Power of Promotion

By Barrett Niehus http://www.freetrainer.com

A novel idea that has been successfully used offline is now becoming more and more prevalent to promote web sites and online resources. It is used to quickly generate notoriety, and for some web sites, is the key to phenomenal growth. The idea is simple, employ young people to become product promotions representatives. Before you balk at the idea, remember back to your youth. What type of T-shirts did you wear? How about the stickers that decorated your notebook and locker? Stickers, logos, and shirts are a very effective promotional tool, and in certain instances become a fashion necessity for young people. These tools can be used effectively to brand your web site, and attract thousands of off-line visitors.

To give you an example of the strategy, consider pimpit.com. Upon arriving at this site, you will first be asked if you would like to become a product representative. The representative kit costs approximately $24.00, and consists of a T-shirt and a variety of stickers. You can also purchase banners, car stickers, and various decals depending on your level of interest. Visitors purchase the kits because of the attractive logo and the rebellious nature of the site name. However, all of these rep kits are promotional tools that further market the web page to the world, and they generate massive amounts of traffic.

Perhaps this idea does not apply and make sense for web sites that are more conservative. However, there are variations on the theme that can result in both massive traffic and growth. For my site, www.freetrainer.com, independent sales representatives are recruited to distribute Real Estate Software to various private and public investors. By asking visitors up-front if they would like to become a distributor, and by providing them with the tools necessary to promote the www.freetrainer.com web site, I am steadily growing our sales and daily traffic.

By using and recruiting representatives to market your product, you increase your off-line exposure and grow the brand awareness of your product. Regardless if a representative actively sells your product, of just wears the T-shirt occasionally, more people will be exposed to your logo and more people will visit your site.

promotional marketing online business tools?

i am trying to market my online business. i have heard of some marketing tools that will help people market their products online, like - reverse word search, adwords, and etc. i need help. i know there is a way to do this - the promotional spots that appear at the top of a search page - i want to be able to get that type of marketing spot. any referrals, or books would be so grateful. thank you for any help.

You're talking specifically about Sponsored search results (PPC or Pay Per Click), which relates to Google AdWords, MSN adCenter, or Yahoo Search Marketing. Using PPC results, you bid for keywords (e.g. if you are selling blue widgets, you can bid $0.05 per click for the search phrase "blue widgets" and also integrate other popular phrases for your products/services in your paid search campaign.) Google will place this search result and make it appear more frequently based on user behavior (if more users click on it, you'll be up top more than someone who actually bids $3 for the same keyword).

It's competitive, and the money adds up quickly, which could be especially more dangerous based on your keyword selection. Also, factors that impact visibility include the presentation of your ad (what you say is important) and the landing page (what you're advertising). Google uses an unknown algorithm and a metric called the Quality Score in order to determine viability of an advertisement in this zone.

For your sake, since this money can dry up quickly, you *definitely* want to read about it. Here are two books that I recommend:
Winning Results with Google AdWords, by Andrew Goodman
Pay Per Click Search Engine Marketing, by Eugene and Boris Mordkovich

Someone touched upon social media marketing and I happen to have written a book on it. Check out The New Community Rules: Marketing on the Social Web written by Tamar Weinberg. This isn't PPC but it's another way (and perhaps cheaper - the only investment is time and understanding of the social space) to market your business using the online communities you visit (including Yahoo! Answers, which just so happens to be in chapter 8). :)

Best of luck.

Bertram what you mentioned about the promotional spots is sponsored ads.

This is known as ppc (pay per click) where you place an ad, and when someone clicks on the ad,you get charged.

I don't mean to be rude but it seems like you don't have a full understanding of this type of marketing and i'd find out as much as possible before you get started with ppc. Many people lose a lot of money on adwords (googles name for sponsored ads) by not doing proprer research.

There are many things needed for a successful ad campaign. Key word research is the most important.

If you want to have chat about adwords or you need help with anything reguarding marketing methods, feel free to contact me.

best wishes

Promoting your company by sponsoring a page in a book conducive to their industry/sector?

I am looking for an author or publisher who create books for the purpose of promoting businesses by adding a "sponsored by" page in that book to give to customers as a promotional/marketing tool.
Has anyone heard of such a concept?

An interesting idea .. problem is, it's (typically) 2 years from book signing to book selling ...

Still you can ask major Publishers (not authors) who publish books in your field ... (you can get Publisher info off Amazon)

how is marketing in the future likely to be? (a projection in 10-20 years time)?

my question is in terms of the marketing strategy, the marketing tools used, the promotional media used, and the mode of transaction.
I also would like to know the possibility for virtual market and virtual money to be used widely (where people don't have to meet face-to-face or bring cash to make a payment--maybe it can be done by card just like our credit card or only using a certain ID and password to a machine just like when we enter our email account).

The market will continue to fragment into smaller and smaller segments. It will be harder to reach a wide audience than ever before . The Internet will continue to grow as an advertising medium.
